This is the rickety old bridge that divided the communities of Salitre and Puente. We assisted the two communities with their rebuilding project.
If it wasn't the end of the dry season, this river would be a raging torrent.
Bridge building is hard work. We had to carry this dense, water-laden log up one mountain, across a jungle plateau, and down another to get it to the bridge.
This little girl, from Salitre, holds a chicken.
Cattle ranching (particularly of Brahma cattle) is a common practice in Costa Rica.
Typical breakfast in Costa Rica: Gallo pinto (rice & beans), ham & eggs, bread, and fried plantains.
This is the site that would later hold a joint church service, with members from both communities joining to celebrate the bridge project.
This by-the-river church service, combined with the bridge project, was a huge step in uniting the communities of Puente and Salitre.*
Leafcutter ants (likely Atta cephalotes).
We played a silly game with the children that involved putting on a ridiculous outfit and running to your partner, then swapping outfits. The children (and us as well) had a blast!*
One of our team members teaches how to make a flytrap out of two 2-liter bottles.*
Black spiny-tailed iguana (Ctenosaura similis).

We taught the local BriBri communities how to make solar ovens, which cook without smoke.*
After the foundation had been strengthened, we hoist one of the bridge's vertical supports.*
Our team poses with some of the children from Puente.*
